Using a unique combination of biomechanics and neuroscience, the mTECH REHAB laboratory investigates the neural and mechanical mechanisms of movement and postural control. The lab uses biomechanical measures (kinematics and kinetics), muscle activation (EMG), and neuroimaging (fMRI) to understand sensorimotor behavior. Current studies focus on the mechanism of movement impairment associated with musculoskeletal injury and persistent pain, as well as the effect of interventions designed to address changes in sensorimotor behavior.

The Rehab Lab SG is a part of the Center for Advanced Rehabilitation Technology (CART) at Virginia Tech. CART is one of Europe’s largest rehabilitation centers that specializes in musculoskeletal and neuromotor disabilities. It was the first to implement the REHAB-LAB fabrication innovation in collaboration with an academic institution, enabling individuals with disabilities to design and make their own assistive devices. The Rehab Lab SG is also working to expand its research in the areas of human motion, robotics and neurophysiology to enable new applications in healthcare for people with disabilities.
